The Challenge

A mid-sized medical device company needed an e-commerce platform for a catalogue of more than 10,000 products — a scale at which standard platforms like WooCommerce and Magento raised real concerns around performance, security, and how far the platform could be customised before it fought back. Off-the-shelf plugin architectures tend to degrade at this catalogue size, and the client needed confidence that the platform would stay fast, secure, and maintainable for the long term rather than accumulating plugin sprawl.

What We Built

A custom e-commerce framework built in PHP on CodeIgniter, backed by MySQL/MariaDB, purpose-built to handle a 10,000+ product catalogue without the overhead of a general-purpose platform. The backend includes a custom CMS for content management and a PIM (Product Information Manager) for structuring and maintaining product data at scale — giving the client direct control over both content and catalogue without depending on third-party plugins. As the Full Application Lifecycle Management partner, exbisoft has owned the platform end to end since launch, including hosting and server maintenance.
